American Sign Language –
Course Description:
The goal of American Sign Language (ASL), is to increase the interest of those who want to learn how to better communicate with people who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, or have difficulties with the English Language. It will provide an awareness of another language that helps anyone in any situation communicate with better understanding.
ASL is a visual language and currently the third most used language in the United States today. It is a hands on language. In this class you will learn how the Deaf Culture originated, learn to analyze Deaf expressions and emotions, learn different components to identify the clarity of the message being conveyed, and learn how the Deaf interact with each other compared to those that are non-deaf. Everyday communication is the centerpiece of every lesson. Topics revolve around sharing information about our environment and us. We work on the expressive and receptive portion of Sign Language. Grammar is introduced in context, with an emphasis on developing question and answering skills. You will learn conversational strategies that help you maintain a conversation. Interaction activities allow you to rehearse what you’ve learned.
Approach:
The curriculum focuses on introducing American Sign Language by engaging you in various interactive activities. The curriculum is based on a visual and expressive language; it requires you to be an active learner. Please arrive and be prepared to sign with me and your classmates. All classes are conducted in American Sign Language (ASL) from the very first day. You are immersed in the language to maximize your language learning. Your ASL teacher will use gestures, signs, drawings, and act out situations to get the point across.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays (Level I) and Thursdays (Level II) from 5:30-7:30pm for 6 weeks.
